No one likes to be told they Can't

Some people suffer from anxiety, others depression, bipolar, drugs, alcohol, the list can go on. But what causes these? Research and studies show that these things tend to come from issues that the person had as a child. Abuse, emotional, sexual, or physical, any one of these can force a person to have anyone of these symptoms. PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is one that you usually don't compare when you hear abuse. But it's real. It hurts and it's hard.

Covering her ears, she started to sing softly to herself. Trying to push the yelling out of her mind. Snuggling up to her older brother who held her close, she started creating a new world. A world where everyone loved each other and no one yelled. No one would hit or scream, no one would put other's down. She whispered to her friend, "I wish it would stop, take me away from here please" She begged for her imaginary friend to take her to this perfect world. Hoping that when she opened her eyes that it would all be over. Sadly it wasn't...... Opening her eyes with a start her brother was tugging her away to a different room, her dad was looking for them.... They had to move and quickly. Running out the back door into the darkness, they ran to the side of the house where they could still see moma in case she needed them. This little girl sank against the house and sat down, crying. Looking up at the stars, begging to leave this situation.......time passed for what seemed like hours, when suddenly the screen door crashed against the wall as her father left the house and got in the truck storming off..............She ran to the road.......silently whispering.......Don't leave me papa!!!! She never knew if he would be back, she never knew if he would hit her, she never knew if he would blow up on a simple question such as "can you help me with my bike?" that would end in a fight. She never knew what would happen.....so uncertain about life, so scared at what it would bring next.

The little girl grew into a teenager, the whole time still living in a world she had created. Dreaming what it would be like to have a care free world, or at least a place she could trust those around her. Doing this caused her to grow distant from those around her. It prevented her from making and keeping friends. Having a hard time letting herself trust again, afraid to let anyone in. She lived in a fantasy. While in reality you would see her in a over sized coat hiding her body from the world, staring at the ground or in the corner whispering to her imaginary friend. Yes she still had him around....no one else she could confide in. Not fully understanding how this was going to effect her later. Later she was able to learn how to cope. Learn how to see the real world and live in the now. She was doing good until...

She was in college, working and going on with life. Doing so good and working hard to do the best she can, living on her own and trying to forget her past. Being a first generation college student she pushed herself to get an education and in record time. She would go through life normally. That was until the PTSD set in.

Intrusion PTSD: Intrusion symptoms arrive suddenly and occur when memories of the past event invade your current life. The most common intrusion symptom is the flashback. Flashbacks are vivid memories that can be triggered by sights, smells, or sounds, and cause you to relive the traumatic experience over and over again. These flashbacks can seem very real and are often detailed and filled with emotion. Another intrusion symptom is the nightmare, which can occur unexpectedly, causing extreme anxiety and fear. She would be normal until one of her triggers would go off sending her into herself unable to come out. Her face would go stone blank, anger and fear would be all over her body language. Deep down inside she was lost and scared, as flashes of memories would come across her mind, she would be dead silent as another world, a world she tried to block came rushing through her mind. Unable to free herself from her world of terror.

Moments like this would happen when a trigger would go off, she had actually suffered from it for years but no one could explain why. Now knowing why, she slowly was able to come out of it with help. As time grew on, she would be able to pull herself out and bring herself back to reality. She would also be able to overcome her demons and triggers. Preventing and future episodes or further damage.

PTSD is real, it's not only in soldiers or those in war, it's in victims of any sort. It's a real problem and some say to get over it. It's not that easy. Others say you can't overcome it. No one likes to be told they can't. So what do most people do with PTSD? They cope, heal and overcome. It's not an easy thing, it's very hard and hurts. The depth of the pain can't be explained, only a portion. But they can cope.

If you suffer from PTSD or any other disorder, don't let others tell you, you can't. Stand up and protect yourself by proving them wrong. Be the stronger person and overcome is, don't let it be your crutch, let it be your building block.

Because YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TOO!!
